‘You’ Trailer: Penn Badgley Stars in a Twisted Love Story About Obsession and Social Media — Watch

In case you were wondering where all your social media data is going, it’s probably being used by your local bookstore manager to make you fall in love with him. This is exactly the plot for Lifetime‘s new series “You,” which stars Penn Badgley (“Gossip Girl”) as that bookstore manager and Elizabeth Lail (“Once Upon a Time”) as the aspiring writer who falls in love with him. The story is complicated by social media and obsession, focusing on the ways in which today’s technology can be harnessed to manipulate emotions.

In addition to Badgley and Lail, the series stars Shay Mitchell (“Pretty Little Liars”), Luca Padovan (“Newsies”), and Zach Cherry (“Search Party”). John Stamos will also be making a guest appearance. Greg Berlanti (“Arrow,” “Riverdale”) and Sera Gamble (“The Magicians”) serve as executive producers and wrote the first episode of the series. The series is based on Caroline Kepnes’ novel of the same name.

Here is the official synopsis for the series: “What would you do in the name of love? When a brilliant bookstore manager crosses paths with an aspiring writer, his answer becomes clear: anything. ‘You’ is a twisted love story about an obsessive, yet brilliant twenty-something who uses the hyper-connectivity of today’s world to make the woman of his dreams fall in love with him.”
