‘Land of the Free’ Trailer: Starz Documentary Shows What It Takes for Former Convicts to Return to Society — Exclusive

For those just released from America’s prison system, the journey back to life on the outside is challenging — and it’s the center of the upcoming documentary “Land of the Free,” premiering soon on Starz.

As captured by filmmaker Camilla Magid (“White Black Boy”), transitioning to life after incarceration is far from easy for the film’s three subjects, South Central Los Angeles residents whom Magid followed for two years after they each reentered society:

Brian, 42, has just been released after having spent 24 years in prison. He must adapt to a modernized and changed society, tackling the challenges of the Internet, getting a driver’s license, and finding love. Juan is a teenager on probation, who wants to be a father for his baby daughter, but he is struggling to leave the drug and gang lifestyle behind. Seven-year-old Gianni’s mother Cezanne is back from jail, but the two are finding it hard to reconnect. When she tries to keep him off the streets and away from the gangs outside, he rebels.
