In Sophia Takal‘s twisted and sharp psychological thriller “Always Shine,” a pair of so-called best pals (played by Mackenzie Davis and Caitlin FitzGerald) head off for a weekend getaway in hopes of resuscitating their failing friendship, only to find their issues further exacerbated by close proximity. And that’s the spoiler-free logline, because “Always Shine” is packed with the kind of shocks and surprises that beg to be discovered on the big screen.
Beth (Davis, who won the Best Actress award at the Tribeca Film Festival for her work in the film) and Anna (FitzGerald) are long-time friends who are both trying to make their way in the hyper-competitive world of Hollywood. While Anna’s star seems to finally be on the rise, Beth has always been viewed as the more talented of the pair, and the jealousies and resentments that both women feel toward each other have only grown during a seemingly benign separation.
When they head off to Big Sur for a relaxed girls’ weekend, it’s impossible for those wounds to stay hidden.
