Surprises are always in store on the morning the Golden Globe nominations are announced, and the 2015 list of TV picks packed a few doozies.
While it was shut out yesterday at the SAG Awards, “Transparent” made a strong showing at the Golden Globes scoring nods for Best Comedy Series and Best Actor in a Comedy for lead Jeffrey Tambor. And on the drama side of things, Showtime’s freshman romance “The Affair” wooed HFPA voters to the tune of three nominations — Best Drama Series, Best Actor (Dominic West) and Best Actress (Ruth Wilson).
“Orange is the New Black” also performed well, landing nominations for Best Comedy Series, Best Actress in a Comedy (Taylor Schilling) and Best Supporting Actress (Uzo Aduba). Aduba, who plays Crazy Eyes on the Netflix dramedy, has now been nominated for an Emmy, SAG Award and a Golden Globe in 2014, making her the most heralded member of the Season 2 cast.
One of the bigger showdowns of the Globes comes in a category usually relegated to the bottom tier of viewers’ interest. Not this year. “True Detective” and “Fargo” will go head to head in the Best Miniseries or TV Movie category, marking the first time the HBO and FX dramas have faced off. Forever linked after FX failed to win the bidding war for “True Detective” and instead took “Fargo” to compensate, both series/miniseries share a similar structure as well — both use the anthology format with new casts and characters each season.
The two shows’ close-ended stories and brief seasons allow them to compete in the miniseries categories at the Globes (or force them in the case of “True Detective,” as HBO would prefer it be considered as a series), whereas they were separated for the 2014 Emmys. “Fargo” has the early lead in total nominations, 5:4, but it will be a hotly-contested campaign to see which beloved program takes home the most hardware.
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are set to host the event for their third consecutive year. The 72nd Annual Golden Globes will air January 11 at 8pm on NBC.
