‘The Affair’ Teases a New Season All About Changing the Narrative on an Already Twisty Story — Watch

The lauded Showtime drama has enjoyed playing with storytelling before, and the newest season just might be taking that idea in a new direction.

Showtime’s Golden Globe-winning drama series “The Affair” has never shied away from packing on the narrative and storytelling twists, from shifting perspectives and memory bias to some big time jumps, and the fourth season of the show doesn’t look to be at all interested in abandoning those ideas.

Think of it this way: when “The Affair” rolls out a teaser trailer with a line about “changing the narrative,” you pay attention, because it’s likely not just some tossed-off note, it might hint at much bigger movements to come. Such is the case with this newest look at the show’s upcoming fourth season.

Per the series’ official synopsis, it follows “the emotional and psychological effects of an affair that destroyed two marriages, and the crime that brings these individuals back together.” This new season will see the four characters at its center — Noah (Dominic West), Helen (Maura Tierney), Alison (Ruth Wilson), and Cole (Joshua Jackson) — “in their own orbits, alienated from each other, spinning further and further away from where they all began.” At a certain point, though, isn’t that a good thing?

As Showtime tells it, “Every character is involved in a new relationship, forcing them each to decide if they’re ready and willing to leave the past behind for good – with a season about new beginnings, tragic ends and the ever-elusive possibility of forgiveness.”

This season will see the arrival of a number of new stars, including Sanaa Lathan, Ramon Rodriguez, Russell Hornsby, Christopher Meyer, Amy Irving, and Phoebe Tonkin. The show returns for its fourth season on Sunday, June 17. Check out the newest teaser for “The Affair” below.
