Watch: Soviet Hockey Team Wages War 'Red Army' Trailer

Sony Pictures Classics has released the debut trailer for Gabe Polsky‘s sports documentary “Red Army,” which earned critical acclaim at festival screenings in Cannes and Toronto. Focusing on the Soviet Union’s Red Army hockey team via the extraordinary human story of team captain Slava Fetisov, the documentary is as much a sports film as it is a stirring look into the political and socioeconomic atmosphere of Cold War Russia.

While the 1970s and 80s are always an era worth exploring in film, by drawing back the Iron Curtain and exposing what Soviet life was like during that time “Red Army” promises an enticingly rare glimpse into a period of history, which many only know from our domestic perspective. With its Soviet perspective on the Red Army, this documentary proves how sports are inexplicably rooted in a nation’s political and cultural makeup.
