Carissa Moore became the youngest world surfing champion, male or female, at 18 years old. After receiving the World Title, she faced severe criticism because of her body — not her abilities as a surfer. She struggled with the pressure and constant evaluation of her body, and even began to lose surfing competitions as a result. In “Riss,” a documentary segment out of ESPNW’s docuseries “What Makes Us,” Moore discusses these challenges in her own words.

Rena Mundo Croshere and Nadine Mundo’s “What Makes Us” premieres this summer, with a new mini documentary premiering periodically throughout the summer. The series focuses on different female athletes throughout the world and includes insight into their rise to fame and the challenges associated with it.

“Riss” premiered today on espnW’s website. Check out an exclusive clip of the documentary above.
