'Star Wars' VFX Master Phil Tippett Launches Kickstarter New VR Game 'HoloGrid: Monster Battle'

Though “Star Wars” certainly captivated the world with its compelling story of a young farmhand fighting against an evil empire, but it also enraptured them with its stunning technology and visual effects, creating an entire world of pure spectacle. One of the VFX masters from the original “Star Wars” trilogy is Phil Tippett, who employed stop-motion animation in “Star Wars” and “The Empire Strikes Back,” before leading the famed LucasFilm creature shop for “The Return of the Jedi.” Now, Tippett is trying to bring his talent to the masses by launching a Kickstarter campaign to fund a new hybrid board game “HoloGrid: Monster Battle.” The hybrid board game will combine the gameplay of collectible card games, like “Magic: The Gathering” and “Hearthstone,” but it will use physical game cards to trigger Augmented Reality creatures and a gameboard. If you need an image, it’s similar to the famous “chess board” scene in the first “Star Wars” film. Watch the announcement trailer above.

He also directed the direct-to-video sequel to “Starship Troopers” called “Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation.” Tippett returned to the “Star Wars” series as the “Millenium Falcon chess scene supervisor” on “The Force Awakens.”
