Now that spring officially has sprung, that means networks have begun unleashing some of their best TV shows in preparation for the awards season cut-off at the end of May. As viewers, we benefit from this surfeit of superb content, when almost anything at the buffet is worth sampling.

But just as we must monitor our food consumption, so must we honor the physical limits of watching television. There are only so many waking hours that we’re able to pay attention to our screens, and thus far, there isn’t a way to download TV shows directly into our brains (perhaps this idea will be forthcoming in the new season of “Black Mirror”).

This is where IndieWire’s team of dedicated TV critics and reporters come in. Our work days (and night and weekends) are devoted to watching as much TV as possible with a critical eye for quality and entertainment value. And then each month, we release a list of the best show on each network. That’s right. Just one.

Certain networks make this a very challenging task. Take, for example, FX, which has blessed us with the likes of “The Americans,” “Legion,” and “Atlanta” as the shiniest gems this month. How can we pick among the best drama on TV in its final run, the most inventive superhero show, and the funniest and most socially insightful comedy on TV? But decided we did, and then sort of cheated here by mentioning all three.

This is a cutthroat time, and if a network isn’t putting out anything worthy of spotlighting, it’s cut for the month. Perhaps they’ll fare better next time around. Don’t worry. There’s plenty of TV to go around, and you probably won’t miss them. And, as always, more coverage of current TV can be found in IndieWire’s TV reviews and episode reviews sections.

So, how does a show make the list? It’s simple.

To be eligible:
a) weekly releases must have aired new episodes within the given month, or
b) full season releases must have premiered no later than the previous month.

That’s it! And now, let’s move on to the list, which you can access through the gallery above or just click here.
