Joss Whedon Would Return Marvel Female-Driven Superhero Movie

Joss Whedon is currently done with the world of Marvel in favor of an original script he’s writing about “a girl who goes through some unbelievable sh-t,” but there is one thing that would tempt the “Avengers” and “Avengers 2: Age of Ultron” director to return. Asked by TheWrap whether he would be interested in helming a female-driven superhero movie, Whedon responds, “Yeah, of course. Although I tend more towards the Jessica Jones-ey kind of stories than the delightful Supergirl stories that my daughter wants.”

There is one such movie in the works, 2019’s “Captain Marvel,” which Whedon won’t be directing (no one is currently attached) but is glad to see in the pipeline. “[Marvel Studios president] Kevin Feige fought a mighty fight to get her on the schedule,” he says. “So it’s a start. You could say that should be a middle, but it’s a start.”

Whedon, who created the shows “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Dollhouse,” among others, has criticized the film industry for what he calls its “genuine, recalcitrant, intractable sexism, and old-fashioned quiet misogyny.”
