Garry Shandling’s Emmys Tribute: Jeffery Tambor Memorializes Friend and ‘Larry Sanders’ Costar
During the Emmy Awards tonight, Jeffrey Tambor memorialized his friend and co-star Garry Shandling, who died this past March. Tambor played the role of sidekick Hank Kingsley on Garry Shandling’s HBO series “The Larry Sanders Show,” which followed the on-air and off-air exploits of neurotic talk show host Larry Sanders, his colorful writing staff, and his producer Artie (Rip Torn).

After Tambor introduced the memorial, the Emmys played a montage of clips from Garry Shandling’s on-screen work, including stand-up bits, a clip from his recent appearance on Jerry Seinfeld’s web series “Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee,” and a “Larry Sanders” clip in which Larry makes uncomfortable small talk with David Duchovny, playing a version of himself who harbors an attraction to Larry.
Shandling began his career working as a TV writer for such sitcoms as “Sanford and Son” and “Welcome Back, Kotter.” After a successful stand-up appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson,” he became a frequent guest-host for Carson until 1987 when he left to focus on his Showtime series “It’s Garry Shandling’s Show.” The series ran for four seasons and was critically acclaimed, especially for its surreal humor and meta-commentary. In 1992, Shandling launched “The Larry Sanders Show” on HBO, which ran until 1998. Before his death, Shandling also made appearances in films such as “Zoolander,” “Iron Man 2,” “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” and “The Jungle Book.”
