Project of the Day: 'American Breakdown'

Here’s your daily dose of an indie film in progress — at the end of the week, you’ll have the chance to vote for your favorite.

In the meantime: Is this a movie you’d want to see? Tell us in the comments.

American Breakdown

Tweetable Logline: A struggling musician gets stranded in an isolated Southern small town, and has to come to terms with a looming crisis of identity.

Elevator Pitch: “American Breakdown” is about Elliot, a struggling musician whose van breaks down in a small, xenophobic Southern town. He’s broke, his girlfriend is breaking up with him, and while he deals with a looming crisis of identity, he meets some of the town’s eccentric residents — Mona, a heartsick housewife; Gabriel, an illegal-status Mexican gardener, and Rourke, the town’s ambitious local politician. As identities and secret desires shift like the wind, Elliot quickly learns that no one is who he thought they were. Not even himself.

Production Team:

About the film: As a big fan of the oddball comedies of the Coen Brothers and Woody Allen, I’ve always wanted to create a film like theirs– smart, often talky, proudly eccentric–but in the redneck, New South milieu in which I was raised. Born and raised in rural Alabama, I know the territory well — the contradictions, the impossibilities, the incongruences. Also, the question of identity seems to me the most fascinating one in the world — who am I? Who do I want to be? This includes not only identity, but nationality and gender.

Current Status: We are having a $30K Kickstarter campaign (Dec. 3 is our final day).
