‘Trolls’ Trailer: DreamsWorks Animation Unleashes A Family-Friendly Acid Trip

The recent woes of DreamWorks Animation have been well documented over the past couple of years. Poor box office returns for originals like “Turbo” and “Mr. Peabody and Sherman,” as well as underperforming “How To Train Your Dragon” and “Kung Fu Panda” sequels, have resulted in a studio in crisis (confirmed further by its recent Comcast acquisition), but if anything can turn its fortunes around, it’s got to be an eye-popping musical extravaganza.

That’s where “Trolls” fits in, the new animated film from co-directors Mike Mitchell and Walt Dohrn based on those wildly popular toys by Thomas Dam. Headed up by the voice talents of Justin Timberlake, Anna Kendrick, Russell Brand, James Corden and more, the film follows two trolls — the always-energetic Poppy and the more pessimistic Branch — as they team up on a quest to save their village from the likes of giant evil creatures known as Bergens.

It’s a relatively simple premise that allows the directors to unleash a dazzling display of colors and toe-tapping musical set pieces. Timberlake oversaw the music for the family film, and his current chart topper “Can’t Stop The Feeling!” gives the trailer an added level of infectious energy. “Trolls” may be for kids, but it’s got the visual wonder of some kind of insane acid trip.
