‘The Young Pope’ Teaser Trailer: Jude Law Is the Titular Pontiff in Controversial HBO Series
“This pope does not negotiate.”
Paolo Sorrentino’s much-hyped HBO series “The Young Pope” stars Jude Law as just that — a young pope, one who has some big ideas about how his unique papacy should look and how the Catholic Church should be run — alternately helped and hurt by various forces surrounding him. Early looks at the series have shown off the scope of Sorrentino’s wild vision and made it plain that the controversial new show is blazing its own path, much like the character it chronicles.
The series bowed its first two episodes at the Venice Film Festival earlier this year — and it’s about to start rolling out on various European channels — where it received stellar reviews for its bold new take on seemingly well-trod material.
Our own Ben Croll wrote at the festival, “One of the interesting elements of this 10-part miniseries is seeing how Sorrentino translates his big-screen exuberance to the more deliberate pace of television. And if this first installment gives us any indication (running two hours, these are actually the first two episodes), the director seems to have acclimated with ease.”

Diane Keaton, James Cromwell, and Silvio Orlando co-star in the miniseries, which will consist of 10 episodes. “The Young Pope” will premiere on HBO later this year.
