"DeKalb Elementary"

The Academy’s Short Films and Animation branch selected five live-action shorts (out of 165 qualified submissions) to contend for the Oscar after attending January branch screenings in Los Angeles, London, New York and San Francisco. Politics may have an impact on this year’s race, as timely “DeKalb Elementary” deals with a troubled young man with a gun ready to wreak havoc on an elementary school. A moving portrait of a deaf girl with a sympathetic teacher, “The Silent Child,” is also a strong contender.
