Meet the 2014 AFI Filmmakers #5: '10,000 Km' Director On How Shoot Long Distance Romance Video Chat
Indiewire invited AFI FEST directors to tell us about their films, including what inspired them and the challenges they faced. The festival runs until November 13.

After directing a series of shorts, Carlos Marques-Marcet is debuting “10,000 Km,” a romantic drama that looks at long distance relationship between two individuals, one who lives in Los Angeles and the other in Barcelona. The film, which screened at SXSW earlier this year, will now play at the AFI Film Fest (running from November 6-13).

Biggest challenge in completing this project?
It was a big challenge shooting in two locations at the same time through video chat. The 23-minute opening shot was a technical challenge, but it was basically solved with preparation, probably the hardest for me was the emotional challenge of shooting the ending.”

Did you crowdfund?
No, but we asked to a bunch of people to loan us money to advance some money from a network.”

What camera did you shoot on?
Red Epic.”

Advice for first-time filmmakers?
Don’t let yourself be fooled by any other filmmaker advice that is not your friend, not even by this one.”

Did you go to film school?
I would like to say that I didn’t and I was totally self-taught, but I did go, and too many years! Both in Spain and the U.S. (UCLA). I made really good friends and most of our crew were people I met there, they are my second family.”

What films have inspired you?
“Ermanno Olmi’s ‘I fidanzati’ has been an inspiration for the movie from the beginning. Of course they are completely different films, I don’t try to copy other filmmaker’s style, but we hoped to get a little bit back of the spirit of that movie into present day. Other movies about couples inspired us too, more in the intentions and goals that in specific references: “We won’t grow old together”, “Two for the road” or “Scenes from a marriage”. But you can’t imitate Pialat or Bergman, you are doomed to fail.”
