The Producers Guild of America have announced the nominations for the 23rd Annual Producers Guild Awards.

The 10 theatrical motion picture nominees included the expected mix of Oscar favorites — “The Artist,” “The Descendants,” “The Help,” “Hugo,” “Midnight in Paris,” “Moneyball” and “War Horse” — as well a few surprises.

“Bridesmaids,” “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” and “The Ides of March,” all of which were seen as long shots for a best picture nomination at the Oscars, got a significant boost in that regard by receiving nominations from the PGA.

Not included? Stephen Daldry’s “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close,” which has quickly seen its Oscar chances weaken from potential frontrunner status to an unlikely inclusion. Also snubbed were “The Tree of Life,” “Drive,” “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” and “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.”

For then past four years, the winner of the PGA Award has gone on to win the best picture Oscar. Last year, the nominees lined up nine out of 10 with Oscar’s list (the Oscars went for “Winter’s Bone” over the PGA’s “The Town”), though notably this year the Oscars could nominate anywhere from five to 10 nominees in their best picture category.

The PGA also announced nominees in a separate animated film category, where Steven Spielberg got a second nomination (in addition to producing “War Horse”) for “The Adventures of Tintin.” Other nominees included “Cars 2,” “Kung Fu Panda 2,” “Rango” and “Puss In Boots.” Among the significant omissions: “Rio” and “Arthur Christmas.”

The 2012 Producers Guild Award winners will be announced January 21 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. This year, the Producers Guild will also award special honors to Leslie Moonves (Milestone Award), Steven Spielberg (David O. Selznick Achievement Award in Theatrical Motion Pictures), Don Mischer (Norman Lear Achievement Award in Television), Stan Lee (Vanguard Award) and “In The Land of Blood and Honey” (The Stanley Kramer Award). The 2012 Producers Guild Awards co-chairs are Paula Wagner and Michael Manheim.
