The Weinstein Co. Takes 'One Chance' With Yahoo Continue Experiments with Distribution

The biggest movie theater these days isn’t a theater at all…it’s the internet. After a successful experiment releasing Bong Joon-ho’s “Snowpiercer” on VOD just two weeks after it hit theaters, The Weinstein Co. continues to test out innovative distribution strategies involving the internet.

Today, The Weinstein Co. and Yahoo announced that the film “One Chance” will premiere exclusively on Yahoo Screen in advance of its theatrical release.

Directed by David Frankel (“The Devil Wears Prada”), the film tells the true story of opera-singing “Britain’s Got Talent” winner Paul Potts.

“We’re so thrilled to be partnering with Yahoo on this first venture in bringing ‘One Chance’ to audiences online before it hits theaters,” said David Glasser, COO and President of The Weinstein Company. “In today’s digital era, technology has developed and changed the landscape of how many people watch movies and TV. Our partnership with Yahoo has allowed us to adapt and expand our reach to limitless audiences.”

The Weinstein Company’s “Snowpiercer” experiment seems to have paid off, with the film’s reported total earnings on VOD and iTunes hitting the $2 million mark in the first week of release. Thompson on Hollywood crunches the numbers further here.

The release dates for “One Chance” continue to shift and the companies haven’t announced a release date, except to say it will hit theaters this fall.

“Every day we help Yahoo users find inspiring and entertaining content. We are excited to bring ‘One Chance,’ a fresh and emotionally compelling film, to Yahoo Screen, thanks to our new partnership with the Weinstein Company,” said Kathy Savitt, CMO of Yahoo, in a statement.
