Sing Street
From the director of "Once" and "Begin Again" comes an unconventional musical movie set in Dublin, 1985. A boy navigating the perils of Catholic school finds solace in music, and the original songs (co-written by Carney) do what all songs in musicals should, but often fail, to do: Move the story forward while communicating something about the character. Though "Sing Street" did not garner as many awards as "Once," it is a welcome addition to the contemporary movie musical canon, which Carney has done much to revitalize.

It’s never easy to cast young actors, but when John Carney found Ferdia Walsh-Peelo and Lucy Boynton to play Conor Lalor and Raphina in his new film “Sing Street,” he struck gold. Set in inner-city Dublin in 1985, the film follows Conor as he enters Synge Street CBS, a free state school, after his parents can no longer afford to pay for his private school education. While Conor encounters bullies and pedophiles in the institution, he catches the eye of Raphina, a beautiful girl who sits across the street. In order to impress her, he tells her that he has a band and needs a model for a music video. Soon, Conor starts a band called Sing Street with other friends and the group starts writing and recording songs, all the while Conor and Raphina start to fall in love and contemplating leaving Ireland for better pastures. Watch an exclusive behind-the-scenes clip below featuring director John Carney talk about casting Conor and Raphina.

Carney is best known for directing the Oscar-winning “Once,” which follows two struggling musicians (Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová) in Dublin, Ireland and the tentative relationship that forms between them. His next film “Begin Again,” follows a singer-songwriter (Keira Knightly) who is discovered by a struggling record label executive (Mark Ruffalo) and collaborates with him to produce an album recorded in public locations all over New York City.

“Sing Street” will be released on Blu-ray, DVD, Digital HD and On Demand on July 26th from Anchor Bay Entertainment.
