‘Queen of Katwe’ Teaser: Lupita Nyong’o & David Oyelowo Instill Confidence In a Chess Prodigy
“Queen of Katwe” is an inspiring tale based on the true story of a young girl from the streets of rural Uganda whose life changes when she is introduced to the game of chess. Directed by Mira Nair, the drama stars David Oyelowo and Lupita Nyong’o and newcomer Madina Nalwanga as Phiona, a 10-year-old girl who becomes an international chess champion.
The film hails from Disney and ESPN Films and follows Phiona as she discovers her passion for the game and sets out to pursue her dreams. Nyong’o plays Phiona’s mother Harriet, a caring woman who is determined to take care of her family despite their impoverished circumstances. Oyelowo portrays Robert Katende, a soccer player turned missionary who teaches local children chess and mentors young Phiona. With hard work and the support she receives from her family and community, Phiona is instilled with the confidence and determination to become a champion.
“Queen of Katwe” is based on Tim Crothers’ book, which was first adapted from an ESPN the Magazine feature. The film will make its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 10 and will open in limited release on September 23, expanding September 30.
