After going to sea with Robert Redford for his last feature “All Is Lost,” writer-director J.C. Chandor returns to New York, the city where his breakthrough debut “Margin Call” was set, for “A Most Violent Year,” his third and arguably highest profile film to date. Distributor A24 today released a new full-length for the possible awards contender — and it’s a stunner.

“A Most Violent Year” follows the life of an immigrant (Oscar Isaac) and his wife (Jessica Chastain, sporting a blonde wig), as they attempt to capitalize on the American Dream during 1981, statistically one of the most crime-ridden years of New York City’s history.

The film will qualify for the Academy Awards by opening in New York and Los Angeles on December 31. It will expand nationally throughout January 2015. It world premieres November 6 at the AFI Film Festival in Los Angeles, CA.
