The Cannes Film Festival lineup was announced this week, a ritual that arrives like clockwork every April. But this year’s announcement was overshadowed by controversy — the widely-reported decision by Netflix to pull five films from the festival after Cannes banned the streaming platform from its competition. Then the festival announced just 17 films in competition, suggesting more were around the corner.
