The Oscars may have just taken place at the start of March, but the 2018-19 awards season is already looming with the Cannes Film Festival just two months away. One of next year’s big contenders for Amazon Studios is “Beautiful Boy,” which marks the English-language debut of Belgian director Felix Van Groeningen. The filmmaker is best know for “The Broken Circle Breakdown.”

“Beautiful Boy” is adapted from David Sheff’s biographical book “Beautiful Boy: A Father’s Journey Through His Son’s Addiction,” which recounts his struggle watching his son, Nic, fall into methamphetamine addiction. Steve Carell is playing David in the movie, while indie breakout Timothée Chalamet is playing the meth-addicted son. The role is expected to bring Chalamet back into the awards conversation less than a year after “Call Me by Your Name” earned him his first Oscar nomination.

Amazon missed the mark during last year’s Oscar race with titles such as Richard Linklater’s “Last Flag Flying” and Todd Haynes’ “Wonderstruck” being overlooked for nominations by the Academy. The studio is surely hoping to rebound this fall and recapture the success it had with “Manchester by the Sea.”

“Beautiful Boy” opens in select theaters October 12, which means the film will most likely skip Cannes and premiere at Telluride or Toronto in September.
