With a highly searchable subject matter, there are a plethora of podcasts exploring the great unknown of human sexuality. Just type “sex” into the Apple Store search bar, and a slew of eyebrow raising titles come up, like “Sex Talk With My Mom” to “The Manwhore Podcast.” But how is one to choose, with only so much time on the morning commute or treadmill? For every engaging, funny, and informative sex podcast out there, there are twice as many skippable duds. Which is why we’ve searched the audio waves to bring you the very best sex-talk the podcast world has to offer.

Ranging from the hilarious and outrageous to the nerdy and informative, with a lot of overlap in between, these eight podcasts represent a diverse array of perspectives. We prioritized entertainment value, non-judgmental approaches, and feminist perspectives to deliver an enjoyable crash course in human sexuality. From long-running torch-bearers like Dan Savage to stylish newcomers Tommy Pico and his all-queer crew of thots, these are the eight most inventive, informative, and titillating sex and sexuality podcasts.

1. “My Dad Wrote a Porno”

Just try listening to “My Dad Wrote a Porno” on public transportation without looking like a laugh-crazed maniac as you stifle guffaws in between stops. With a concept as brilliant as its hosts, “My Dad Wrote a Porno” stands out against the glut of talk podcasts with a predictable structure masking its anything-but-predictable contents. Sailing by on the crackling wit and genuine love shared between hosts Jamie Morton, James Cooper, and Alice Levine, “My Dad Wrote a Porno” chronicles the three friend’s reading of “Belinda Blinked,” a series of erotic novels written by Morton’s dad, who uses the pen name Rocky Flinstone for his bawdy books. Morton reads, somewhat chirpily, while Cooper and Levine interject to question, heckle, or just plain crack up at Rocky’s sometimes awkward prose.

Though Morton sometimes rises to Rocky’s defense in spite of himself, the gang’s quips remain loving, never sinking into cruelty. Whether that’s old-fashioned British manners or genuine interest is anyone’s guess, and Belinda certainly keeps these three guessing. A runaway hit, “My Dad Wrote a Porno” boasts such illustrious fans as Nicholas Hoult, Elijah Wood, Michael Sheen, and Daisy Ridley. It’s worth starting from the beginning — you won’t want to miss a thing.

2. “Why Are People Into That?!

No matter how salacious the topic, a podcast can live or die by its host. Even a show about sex can be dry and boring in the hands of the wrong host. Which is why Tina Horn’s wickedly funny “Why Are People Into That?!” is a balm in the storm. A former queer porn star and highly experienced sex educator, Horn brings a theatrical flair to her audio persona, seducing listeners with a sultry voice and easily creating a non-judgmental atmosphere for her guests. Throughout her years in the sex industry, she developed quite the rolodex of sex workers and experts from all walks of life, and the guests arrive informed, open minded, and ready to fool around.

Each episode explores a topic of human sexuality, from something “as conventional as breasts or as fringe as play piercing” and sincerely asks the question: Why are people into that? Horn and her guests, experts in their chosen topics, blend science, psychology, and history with personal stories to approach each subject in a fun and informative way. Best guests: Siouxsie Q, James Darling, Mollena Williams, and Sinclair Sexsmith.

3. “Sex Nerd Sandra

Part of Chris Hardwick’s Nerdist podcast network, “Sex Nerd Sandra” has been keeping sex nerds informed and entertained since 2011. A licensed sex educator, lovable host Sandra Daugherty approaches every topic with an excitable curiosity and somewhat anthropological approach. Beneath her bubbly persona lies a serious interest in the depth and breadth of human sexuality, with topics ranging from cougars to edge play to erotic hypnosis. With over 14 million downloads, Sandra is an international podcast celebrity, often traveling the world for live tapings. She is open about her own sex life, but never leans too hard on the confessional, preferring to keep the focus on her guests’ unique perspectives. Her genuine interest and affection is contagious, and listening to her chirping voice often feels like hanging out with a (highly knowledgeable) friend. Sandra knows the value of a laugh, and breaks up the sex expertise with a healthy sprinkle of LA-based comedians. Best guests: Nina Hartley, Cameron Esposito, Eliza Skinner, and Kevin Allison.

4. “Savage Lovecast

No sex list would be complete without a mention of the man who started it all, Dan Savage. Since its debut in 1991, his sex-advice column in Seattle publication The Stranger changed the way we think and talk about human sexuality, and he has continued those efforts via the “Savage Lovecast” since 2006. Staunchly political, he opens with his riffs on the week’s headlines before doling out his tough love advice to the many callers who leave messages on his answering service. Though he has his critics, Savage has made efforts to correct his language and thinking around trans issues and polyamory. None of the podcasts on this list would exist without him.

On the next page: Podcasts where the queer glitterati take over, sex workers are centered and uplifted, and “Short Term 12” star Stephanie Beatriz gets personal.
