[Editor’s Note: The trailer above gives away a few major plot details from the upcoming “Rocky” spinoff directed by “Fruitvale Station” helmer, Ryan Coogler. The much-discussed first trailer, meanwhile, gives away nothing and is just as thrilling as the first time you watched it.]

We all know the routine these days: make an acclaimed indie, land a big franchise movie (see “Jurassic World’s” Colin Trevorrow for the latest example). Although writer-director Ryan Coogler is not going to be an exception to this mantra, he is taking a much riskier gamble in building off the success of his adored 2013 Sundance sensation “Fruitvale Station.”

Awakening the “Rocky” film franchise for the first time since 2006’s critical and commercial hit “Rocky Balboa” — the film tripled its budget domestically — Coogler looks to put his own mark on the universe; namely, by focusing the story on more than just the son of Apollo Creed. If the director’s eye for urban realism isn’t enough to set this spinoff apart, luckily Michael B. Jordan is front and center as the eponymous Creed, who travels to Philadelphia in hopes that Rocky (Sylvester Stallone, reprising his Oscar-nominated role) will train him for an upcoming fight. And yes, Stallone is back, though he’ll be selling sage-like wisdom instead of landing knockouts this go ’round.

“Creed” co-stars Tessa Thompson and Phylicia Rashad and opens nationwide November 25. Watch the great new trailer above.
