The Doctor of 'Doctor Who' Voted Best Sci-Fi Character Epic BFI Poll

The British Film Institute has revealed the results of its poll calling for the greatest sci-fi character of all time, and the Doctor from “Doctor Who” has taken the top prize.
The Doctor edged out the “Alien” franchise’s Ellen Ripley by only 110 votes. Must have been all of the complicated timey-wimey stuff. With Ripley taking spot number two, the rest of the top ten was filled out by Anakin Skywalker (“Star Wars”), Kerr Avon (“Blake’s 7”), Captain Malcolm Reynolds (“Firefly,” “Serenity”), G’Kar (“Babylon 5”), HAL 9000 (“2001: A Space Odyssey”), Rick Deckard (“Blade Runner”), Han Solo (“Star Wars”) and Spock (“Star Trek”).
The poll was launched back in August as a part of a nationwide celebration of on-screen sci-fi onscreen known as “Days of Fear and Wonder.” The poll received over 9,000 votes, and BFI also revealed a few stats to go along with the decision:
  • •38% of characters originated in Film, while 62% originated on TV.
  • •Heroes outweigh villains, with 82% of voters siding with a force for good.
  • •The 1990s emerged as voters’ golden age for Sci-Fi characters, with that decade boasting 28% of all the characters voted for.
