‘Fantastic Beasts’ Director Discusses Eddie Redmayne Casting Spells in NYT’s ‘Anatomy of a Scene’
Warner Bros.’ “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” has gotten off to a magical start, bringing in $8.8 million at the box office from Thursday night preview showings in North America, Variety reports. The Harry Potter spinoff movie starring Eddie Redmayne is expected to generate around $75 million during its first weekend in theaters.

The film follows wizard Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) as he seeks to retrieve a number of magical creatures that escaped from his valise and are scattered around 1926 New York City. Director Adam Yates recently sat down with The New York Times to discuss an early scene from the film for the Times‘ “Anatomy of a Scene” series. In the scene, Redmayne’s Scamander reveals he’s a wizard to Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler) by using his wand to cast spells and summon creatures inside a bank, where one of the fantastic beasts is running amok and another is just hatching out of an egg.
“It’s a gentle introduction to the story that’s quite fun,” Yates said in the video, adding that one of the spells Redmayne casts on a bank employee will be very familiar to Harry Potter fans.
