Earlier this month, Todd Haynes‘ “Carol” debuted at the Cannes Film Festival to rave reviews, with Indiewire’s own Eric Kohn praising the director for his unique ability to “[develop] sophisticated narratives out of existing cultural reference points.” In his review of the film, Kohn went on to note, “With ‘Carol,’ that approach stems from the text itself, which Haynes enriches by delivering a mannered, classical romance that replaces the original pulp identity of the novel at the time of its release with a gentle, affecting two-hander as the author surely envisioned it.”

The film marks Haynes’ return to filmmaking after a seven-year-hiatus and reunites him with his longtime producing partner Christine Vachon, who, earlier this year, was appointed as Graduate Director of Stony Brook’s Master of Fine Arts film program.

Indiewire recently shared an exclusive video of Haynes in conversation with Vachon sharing tips for first-time filmmakers. In part two of the video (above), produced by Stony Brook University and Killer Films in partnership with Indiewire, Haynes talks about the challenge of directing a film from a script he didn’t write. “In some ways, it’s almost easier to let stuff go when it’s your own than when it’s somebody else’s,” Haynes said about “Carol,” which Phyllis Nagy adapted from the Patricia Highsmith novel.

Applications to the Stony Brook program are open through July 15, 2015. To find out more about the program, click here.
