Meryl Streep to Join ‘Mary Poppins’ Sequel With Emily Blunt

Meryl Streep is circling a supporting role in the upcoming Disney‘s “Mary Poppins Returns,” Variety reports. The three-time Oscar winner is likely to close a deal for the role of Mary Poppins’s cousin Topsy, who was not in the 1964 original film.

If cast in the Disney production, Streep would be reunited with her “Into the Woods” co-star Emily Blunt, director Rob Marshall, and producers John DeLuca and Marc Platt. The 2014 fairy tale story earned Streep her 19th Oscar nomination.

Blunt is set to play the role of Poppins in the film alongside “Hamilton” creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda, who will play the role of Jack, a street lamplighter who was also not in the original “Mary Poppins.”

Here’s the official synopsis for the film: In Depression-era London, a now-grown Jane and Michael Banks, along with Michael’s three children, are visited by the enigmatic Mary Poppins following a personal loss. Through her unique magical skills, and with the aid of her friend Jack, she helps the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives.

Streep gave a speech on Tuesday at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. Next month, she will appear in Paramount’s “Florence Foster Jenkins,” the biographical comedy-drama about a New York heiress who wants to become an opera singer despite having a terrible singing voice.
