James Cameron Slammed Online for ‘Avengers’ Criticism, but Marvel’s Kevin Feige Is Staying Positive About It

James Cameron is feeling the wrath of the internet after a comment he made to IndieWire criticizing the Marvel Cinematic Universe went viral. While promoting his upcoming AMC series “James Cameron’s Story of Science Fiction,” the “Titanic” and “Avatar” director said that he hopes the industry starts getting tired of the “Avengers” storyline because “there are other stories to tell.”
“I’m hoping we’ll start getting ‘Avenger’ fatigue here pretty soon,” Cameron said. “Not that I don’t love the movies. It’s just, come on guys, there are other stories to tell besides hyper-gonadal males without families doing death-defying things for two hours and wrecking cities in the process. It’s like, oy!”
Cameron’s comments immediately earned backlash online, with many fans finding the irony in the fact that Cameron is urging for “other stories” at the same time he’s filming four “Avatar” sequels and producing the next “Terminator.” The statement even reached Marvel head Kevin Feige thanks to Vulture, but Feige isn’t letting Cameron bring him down ahead of the release of “Avengers: Infinity War.”
“Uh, he loves the movies!” Feige said, choosing to only focus on the positive part of Cameron’s statement. “That’s awesome! Wow, James Cameron loves our movies! That’s exciting!”
The “Avengers” comment is hardly the only time Cameron has courted controversy in a recent interview. The director made headlines last year for criticizing “Wonder Woman” by saying the film did not break any new ground and singling out Gal Gadot’s “bustier costume that was very form-fitting.”
