Asif Kapadia‘s documentary “Amy” captures Amy Winehouse‘s spirit by celebrating her immense talent, while acknowledging the very real obstacles she faced with drug addiction and mental illness.

Kapadia’s ability to weave Amy’s story honestly and poignantly, as well as the amount of footage he was able to accumulate and share in his documentary, is what grabbed audience’s attention at Cannes in May. In this new clip from the film, which Refinery29 exclusively premiered earlier today, Amy Winehouse speaks candidly about her struggles with depression and the therapeutic role music played in battling the illness.

The clip above is just one of the many interviews and snippets of archival footage you can see in the documentary “Amy,” which will open in New York and Los Angeles on July 3. The doc hits theaters nationwide July 10.
