Timothée Chalamet won top honors at the 2018 Indie Spirit Awards, earning the Best Actor trophy for his breakout lead role in Luca Guadagnino’s “Call Me By Your Name.” The 22-year-old actor, who is nominated in the same category at this year’s Oscars, beat out fellow nominees Daniel Kaluuya (“Get Out”), Robert Pattinson (“Good Time”), James Franco (“The Disaster Artist”), and Harris Dickinson (“Beach Rats”).

Chalamet’s win at the Indie Spirit Awards is the latest victory for the actor. His role in “Call Me By Your Name” has earned him numerous accolades this awards season, including best actor prizes from over a dozen critics groups, including the New York Film Critics Circle, and the breakthrough actor award at the Gotham Awards.

The actor’s Oscar nomination makes him the third youngest nominee in the category ever and the youngest since 1939. The frontrunner is “Darkest Hour” star Gary Oldman, but should Chalamet pull off an upset he’ll become the youngest winner ever. Adrian Brody currently holds the record for being 28 years old when he won for “The Pianist.”

Chalamet’s Spirit Award victory makes him the third youngest Best Actor champ, behind “Beasts of No Nation” star Abraham Attah, who was 14 when he won two years ago, and the late River Phoenix, who was 21 at the time of his honor for “My Own Private Idaho.”

Following the success of “Call Me By Your Name,” Chalamet will return to theaters next awards season in “Beautiful Boy.” He has also been cast as King Henry V in David Michôd’s Netflix epic “The King.”
