‘Gabe’ Confronts the Stereotypes About People with Disabilities

Tweetable Logline: A recent college graduate with muscular dystrophy discovers overnight that his life expectancy has doubled.
Elevator Pitch: What would you do if you suddenly had to start planning for the rest of your life after assuming you wouldn’t even have one? “Gabe” is a documentary feature that follows Gabe Weil, a 27-year-old born with the most severe form of muscular dystrophy. For his entire life, Gabe had been told he would be lucky to live past the age of 25. But recently, he learned he was misdiagnosed, and may live well into his 50’s. The news puts Gabe, a recent college graduate, on a journey of discovery that he had never thought possible.

About the Film: This project started as a request from Gabe to film important moments in his life. It didn’t take long to see that we had something much more than a home video. The stereotypes/misconceptions about people with disabilities are misguided yet prevalent, often making it hard for someone like Gabe to integrate into a community. Our goal with this film is to be a resource that reveals misconceptions about individuals with disabilities. By the end of the film, we hope people won’t see a young man in a wheelchair, but a human being trying to find his place in the world.
