‘The Meg’ Trailer: Jason Statham Battles a Giant Shark in Summer’s Wackiest Would-Be Blockbuster — Watch
Consider this one summer’s easiest — if not quickest — sell: It’s Jason Statham, battling a giant shark. Long-in-the-works, would-be blockbuster “The Meg” finally cruises into theaters this summer with an appetite for both blood and destruction. And that’s to say nothing of what the shark wants (which, yes, appears to be much of the same).
At first blush, “The Meg” looks like an unholy — but surely very entertaining — cross between “Deep Blue Sea” (another shark movie set on an exceedingly swanky research facility) and “Jurassic Park” (this particular shark is a prehistoric one, a monster from the past still alive today), a giant-sized “Jaws” for the popcorn cinema crowd. Basically, the perfect summer movie. And yet this one comes with an added edge that seems poised to make it even more wild: Statham’s character and the massive shark have a past together.
Billed as a “science fiction action thriller,” Jon Turteltaub’s film picks up after a giant shark, once believed to be extinct, attacks a deep-sea submersible filled with international scientists on an undersea observation mission. Understandably, such a fraught situation requires an expert, and that’s where Statham’s character, deep sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor, comes into play. Recruited by an oceanographer (Winston Chao) to save the seemingly ill-fated crew, Jonas teams up with Suyin (Li Bingbing) to take down the “Megalodon” and get everyone out a-okay.
Of course a guy like Jonas has a past, but “The Meg” imagines that he has a specific past with the monster itself, perhaps hinting that this mission isn’t entirely professional in nature. Again: It’s Jason Statham, battling a giant shark. Watch the first trailer for “The Meg” below.
