Impassioned political acceptance speeches punctuated an otherwise run-of-the-mill Oscars ceremony last night, with Neil Patrick Harris landing half his jokes and the predicted frontrunners getting their due.
A notable upset, though, was the “Boyhood” Best Picture and Best Director snub, which incensed cinephiles and celebrities alike across the far reaches of the internet. Here’s how Twitter reacted to that and more.

Good thing John Travolta wasn’t terrifyingly creepy this year

Terrence Howard sounded like the waiter that makes you uncomfortable while he’s passionately describing the specials.

Ethan Hawke just told Robin Roberts he feels like a “gentle pirate.” THE NIGHT HAS ALREADY PEAKED.

Birdman is a terrific movie. Boyhood is a masterpiece — The Academy just made its worst mistake in 20 years: http://t.co/LnlAQ28xH9
— Casey Neistat (@CaseyNeistat) February 23, 2015
Missed it; figured that Keaton carried Birdman.
— Richard Brody (@tnyfrontrow) February 23, 2015
Boyhood should have won. However, thank you for mentioning Guillermo Del Toro. And I love you, @MichaelKeaton. I truly love you. #Oscars
— Patton Oswalt (@pattonoswalt) February 23, 2015
Part of why Boyhood should have won is that the people who love it, love it much, much more than the people who love Birdman.
— emilynussbaum (@emilynussbaum) February 23, 2015
After critics groups almost unanimously embraced BOYHOOD, academy ended up embracing BIRDMAN, which features a nasty critic. Oh, the irony.
