“The Great Wall” is based on a story by Thomas Tull and Max Brooks and is the largest movie ever shot entirely in China. It also features a star-studded international cast which includes Pedro Pascal, Jing Tian, Willem Dafoe, Andy Lau and pop icon Luhan.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly the helmer, also known for directing “House of Flying Daggers” and “Hero,” told the magazine that the film takes place 1,000 years ago, “At its core, it is a period piece and an action film. The fantasy element does play a major role because of the monsters. But, what makes our film unique is that these are ancient Chinese monsters. Even though it’s a fantasy movie, we filmed it in a very realistic way.”
