Most of us “Mad Men” fans would find it pretty difficult to see Elisabeth Moss as anybody other than Peggy Olsen, the ambitious secretary turned copywriter turned copy chief turned ruler of the world. But, at last night’s premiere of the oh-so elusive “The One I Love,” we got the opportunity to see the talented actress, who is by no means shy or insecure, show how different she is from her TV character. She’s extremely outgoing, is really good at party games and, at one point, even told us off.

Outside the Crosby Hotel theater in SoHo, Indiewire had the opportunity to chat with the film’s cast and crew, who walked the red carpet in support of the indie. Except, the carpet wasn’t so much red, but more of a multi-colorful patterned thing. The same could be said for director Charlie McDowell, Moss and her co-star, actor Mark Duplass — all colorful characters who seem to the best of friends in real life.

McDowell said of their onset dynamic, “We were all staying at this house that we shot at and people were staying at guest houses next door and so we all just came together [after shooting] and we all got obsessed with playing games.”

There to support McDowell, a first-time director, was the man’s mother, who just happens to be Oscar-winner Mary Steenburgen (“The Proposal,” “30 Rock”). We didn’t get the opportunity to speak to her, but she was radiant, clearly happy for her son’s success. Steenburgen also has a very minor appearance in the film. We won’t say any more on that.

Onto the games. McDowell had mentioned an obsession with Catch Phrase, a word-guessing party game that managed to take time away from shooting.

Duplass spoke about the distraction. “Well, you know, it was like 20 or 25 of us and we all lived where we shot and Lizzy became obsessed with the game. So, like, a lot of times we would do this over eating and I would try to work on scenes for the next day and Lizzy was kind of like, ‘let’s get the Catch Phrase out.’ At a certain point I was like, ‘I gotta put away the Catch Phrase. We gotta work here.'”

Moss insisted that she was the best at Catch Phrase and also spoke about how she brought the game to the “Mad Men” set, getting the cast and crew obsessed as well. At one point we even asked her to explain the game rules. She replied, “Right now? You really want me to explain to you how the game works right now? Just Google it!”

After being put in our place, we brought another, entirely serious question to the actors’ attention. Considering the buddy-buddy relationship between Moss and Duplass, we couldn’t help but ask them how it must have felt making out with a friend for a film (the two play a married couple). “It’s weird. It’s always super weird. Like we’ve been friends for years, but it’s always super weird making out with anybody that you’re not actually in a relationship with,” Moss said.

Duplass agreed, further adding, “Uh, you know, I’m good friends with my wife and we make out all the time and that’s super fun. I don’t know. It’s like something you get used to, as crazy as that sounds and there’s always an oddness the first time you do it. Then you realize, ‘Oh OK this is quite normal.’ I mean I acted in this TV show called ‘The League’ and one of our best friends is Stephen Rannazzisi who constantly has to make out with my real life wife, like next to me on the couch.”

“The One I Love” will hit select theaters August 22nd. It’s also available to watch now on video on demand.
