Louis C.K Heading Back to the Big Screen with Indie Film ‘I’m a Cop’
For someone who’s said they don’t like acting — in “Louie,” at least — Louie C.K. sure isn’t shying away from the challenge. The Emmy-winning creator, writer, director, editor and star of “Louie” on FX is now set to star in his own film, “I’m a Cop,” as well as write and direct the picture.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, “I’m a Cop” follows a depressed, middle-aged volunteer police officer (C.K.) who’s forced into becoming a real cop when his heroic, heavily-decorated mother dies and leaves a legacy to be fulfilled on the force. The only problem? He never wanted to be a cop.
C.K. has tried his hand at feature film directing before with largely disastrous results: The comedian helmed the 2001 comedy “Pootie Tang,” starring his friend Chris Rock, but was kicked off the project due to creative differences with Paramount.
“I was dealing with people every day whose pressures I didn’t understand, and I wasn’t very nice about how I said no to them,” C.K. said in an interview with THR earlier this year. “I put myself in a position I didn’t have to be in. A lot of what makes this kind of stuff work is empathy.”
Now, he says he’s ready to try again. Only this time, he’ll be avoiding the studios. C.K. is teaming with Hollywood super-producer Scott Rudin for “I’m a Cop.” Rudin recently worked with Rock on “Top Five,” helping it to a wide release and even wider critical acclaim. C.K. must’ve heard good things from his friend about the experience, but he’s still bringing on Dave Becky and Blair Breard as producers. Breard worked with C.K. on his stand-up specials and continues to executive produce “Louie” on FX.
The only question remaining — other than who will play C.K.’s mother in the film (perhaps Mary Louise Wilson?) — is if “I’m a Cop” will at all resemble Matthew Broderick’s “Cop Movie” in the Season 1 episode of “Louie.” Hopefully Louie’s casting instincts are better than Broderick’s…but that likely means he would not have cast himself.
