Specialty Box Office: Polley’s ‘Stories’ Has Solid Start; ‘Mud’ Keeps It Coming In Expansion (UPDATED)
As far as the specialty market goes, the summer movie season is off to a very strong start for Roadside Attractions. The third week of their breakout hit “Mud” managed a place in the overall top 10, while the debut of their acclaimed doc “Stories We Tell” was off to a very solid start.
“Stories” — directed by Sarah Polley and depicting the history of her own family — opened in two New York thetaers this weekend and managed a $31,000 gross, averaging $15,500. The numbers were impressively up 172% from Friday to Saturday, a good sign for future growth.
“The opening is in the range of openings of last year’s doc hits ‘Searching For Sugar Man; from SPC ($9153 a screen opening on 3 screens in NY/LA, $3,657,684 final gross) and ‘Queen of Versailles’ from Magnolia ($17,109 a screen opening on 3 screens in NY/LA, $2,401,999 final gross), which is right where we want to be,” compared Roadside Attractions’ Howard Cohen in a statement to Indiewire.
“Stories We Tell” expands to 20 screens in 7 top markets next Friday.
As for “Mud,” Jeff Nichols’ Matthew McConaughey-starrer went from 576 to 854 screens and increased its grosses 8%, taking the film into the overall top 10 and suggesting it is working well as a counterprogramming to typical summer studio fare. It grossed $2,343,400 for the weekend, averaging $2,764 and taking its total to $8,363,379. It seems likely to join “The Place Beyond The Pines” and “Quartet” as the third 2013 specialty release to pass the $15 million mark.
