'Sylvio' Looks Bring Social Media's Favorite Gorilla the Big Screen

[Editors Note: Project of the Day is presented in partnership with Blackmagic Design, one of the world’s leading innovators and manufacturers of creative video technology.]

Here’s your daily dose of an indie film, web series, TV pilot, what-have-you in progress — at the end of the week, you’ll have the chance to vote for your favorite.

In the meantime: Is this a project you’d want to see? Tell us in the comments.

Sylvio

Logline: “Sylvio” is about a gorilla struggling to express his humanity, who through a series of mishaps finds himself the unlikely star of a public access TV show.

Elevator Pitch:
We’re developing a popular Vine character, Simply Sylvio, into a feature length independent film. On Vine, Sylvio has over 360,000 followers and over 89 million views, and is rapidly growing. In the film, Sylvio accidentally joins a local TV program and a series of on-air mishaps threaten to shatter his identity, sending him on an adventure of self-discovery where reality and fantasy start to blend.

Think “Wayne’s World” but with a gorilla, then add an extra scoop of visual inventiveness, the DIY style of Michel Gondry and the imagination of Jim Henson.

Production Team:
Albert Birney, Writer/Co-Director (“The Beast Pageant”)
Kentucker Audley, Writer/ Co-Director/ Lead (“Queen of Earth,” “The Sacrament”)
Meghan Doherty, Producer (author of “How Not to Be a Dick”)
Josh Polon, Producer (“Animals,” “Manson Family Vacation”)
Nicholas Gurewitch, Actor (“Perry Bible Fellowship”)
Eric LaPlante, Director of Photography (“The Beast Pageant”)

About the Film:
We want to make a film that celebrates creativity and the importance of friendship and collaboration; a film that uplifts and amuses and acts as a vitamin. We want to create images that inspire viewers and evoke smiles long after they’ve left the theater.

We’re making “Sylvio” with the help of a community of friends and filmmakers. We see the themes and images in the film resonating deeply with the current generations of independent film fans and beyond. This is a film for people tired of the standard; a DIY project that gets to the heart of storytelling!

Current Status: Fundraising.
