Dwayne Johnson Wishes Vin Diesel ‘All the Best’ After Feud, Admits They Fought Over the Collaborative Process

Dwayne Johnson looks back on his infamous feud with Vin Diesel in a new interview with Rolling Stone. The two actors made headlines in August 2016 after Diesel took to his Instagram page to criticize some of his male co-stars on “The Fate of the Furious.” The actor wrote that certain actors were not professional on set and he famously referred to them as “candy asses.”

“When you watch this movie next April and it seems like I’m not acting in some of these scenes and my blood is legit boiling — you’re right,” Johnson wrote at the time.

Johnson told Rolling Stone that Diesel was in fact the intended recipient of his Instagram message and disclosed that the two actors just didn’t see eye-to-eye when it came to the moviemaking and collaborative processes. Johnson said the tension between the two was the reason they “were not in any scenes together” in the film. The actor remains uncertain as to whether or not he will reprise his role as Hobbs in another “Furious” film opposite Diesel.

“Right now I’m concentrating on making the [‘Fast & Furious’] spin-off as good as it can be,” Johnson said, referring to his standalone movie with Jason Statham. “But I wish him all the best, and I harbor no ill will there, just because of the clarity we have. Actually, you can erase that last part about ‘no ill will.’ We’ll just keep it with the clarity.”

Johnson continued about the feud: “What I came to realize is that we have a fundamental difference in philosophies on how we approach moviemaking and collaborating. It took me some time, but I’m grateful for that clarity. Whether we work together again or not.”

The actor previously spoke about the feud during a November 2016 interview with the Los Angeles Times. Johnson admitted that “Furious” distributor Universal Pictures wasn’t too happy that the feud went viral after his Instagram post, although Johnson did point out the irony over the fact the feud brought a ton more publicity to the film.

Johnson next appears on the big screen in the video game adaptation “Rampage,” which opens nationwide April 13. IndieWire has reached out to Diesel for comment.
