James Wan Considering Leaving ‘Aquaman’ Director’s Chair Due to DC Universe Troubles — Report
One needn’t be a comic-book expert in order to glean that Marvel far outpaces its superhero brethren in terms of silver-screen entertainment, with the box-office juggernaut that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe serving as the gold standard. Among its competition is the Warner Bros-owned DC Comics, whose cinematic excursions haven’t been quite so successful. “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” made beaucoup bucks ($862 million worldwide as of this writing) but hasn’t exactly endeared itself to the hearts of most fans, while related movies in development appear to be struggling. It was reported late on Friday night that Seth Grahame-Smith will no longer be helming “The Flash,” and now it looks as though James Wan may be departing “Aquaman” as well.
Wan — who first came to attention for directing “Saw” and has since helmed “Insidious,” “The Conjuring” and “Furious 7” — is said to be hesitant about “Aquaman,” reports Birth.Movies.Death. Grahame-Smith left “The Flash” over “creative differences,” but nothing concrete is currently known about the details of Wan’s ambivalence. The film will star Jason Momoa (Khal Drogo on “Game of Thrones”) in the title role and Amber Heard as Mera.

Both Wan and Grahame-Smith are preceded by Michelle MacLaren leaving “Wonder Woman,” also due to disagreements about the project’s creative direction. Now directed by Patty Jenkins, “Wonder Woman” is set to open on June 2, 2017. “The Flash” and “Aquaman” will follow on March 16 and July 27 of the following year, respectively.
