One of the most divisive movies at Cannes this year was easily Olivier Assayas‘ “Personal Shopper.” Touted as the big reunion between the filmmaker and his “Clouds of Sils Maria” darling Kristen Stewart, the film was met with rapturous applause and boos alike, prompting a divided response that only has increased anticipation for this unusual paranormal drama. Many critics and fans point to “Clouds” as Stewart’s best performance yet, so any chance to see this pair reunite is bound to pique the interest of cinephiles.

Stewart plays a young woman living in Paris whose brother dies from a heart problem. Before his death, they made an oath that whomever died first would send the other a sign from beyond the grave. Her ensuing attempts take a number of sharp turns, first with a seemingly literal encounter with a ghost and then later with something much creepier.

In his review out of Cannes, IndieWire Chief Film Critic Eric Kohn wrote, “This is a measured, richly ambiguous work about the subjective process of grief — masquerading as a ghost story — that experiments with the minutiae of film language as only a master of the medium can do.”

The trailer only teases the slow-burn suspense that awaits. While the plot sounds like a traditional ghost story, fans of Assayas already know to expect something a bit more introspective. Consider it a ghost story with an art-house twist. Watch the trailer below. IFC Films will release “Personal Shopper” sometime next year.
