Zach Braff To Direct and Star in New Comedy Pilot ‘Start Up’ at ABC
Actor Zach Braff received his first break as protagonist J.D. in the NBC medical sitcom “Scrubs,” about the lives of employees at Sacred Heart teaching hospital. The series garnered quite a bit of attention for its single-camera style (generally uncommon for sitcoms when “Scrubs” first aired in 2001), surreal vignettes, use of popular music, and its frequent tonal shifts. For his performance, Braff was nominated for an Emmy in 2005 and thrice nominated for a Golden Globe in 2005, 2006, and 2007.
Now, Braff is set to return to the world of television after leaving it behind in 2010. Deadline reports that Braff will direct and star in a new comedy pilot for ABC called “Start Up.” The series will follow the trials and tribulations of a family man in his 30s who quits his good job and dives into the risky world of starting a business. Braff will executive produce the series along with Matt Tarses, who previously produced “Scrubs,” “Sports Night,” and most recently, “The Goldbergs.”

Braff is no stranger to being behind the camera as he’s directed two previous features, “Garden State,” about a depressed actor/waiter who returns to his hometown in New Jersey after his mother dies, and the Kickstarter-funded “Wish I Was Here,” about a struggling actor who decides to homeschool his kids after funds are diverted to aid his father’s cancer treatment. He also directed the heist comedy “Going in Style,” a remake of the 1979 film of the same name, starring Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine, which is set to be released on April 7th, 2017.
