Gary Oldman will appear in three films by the end of 2016 — “Man Down,” “Criminal” and “The Space Between Us” — but all in co-starring roles. By this time next year, he will star in a Winston Churchill biopic directed by Joe Wright. The film follows Churchill’s struggle to stand firm against Nazi Germany as an invasion of Great Britain is imminent. Written by Anthony McCarten (“The Theory of Everything”), it will co-star John Hurt (“The Elephant Man”), Lily James (“Downton Abbey”), Ben Mendelsohn (“Mississippi Grind”) and Kristin Scott Thomas (“The English Patient”). The film will be Joe Wright’s seventh feature. He first garnered acclaim with his 2005 adaptation of “Pride and Prejudice,” which received four Oscar nominations, including Best Actress for Keira Knightley. His next feature was “Atonement,” based on Ian McEwan’s 2001 novel, which won Best Picture – Drama at the Golden Globes, was nominated for seven Oscars and won one for Best Original Score. He went on to direct the music drama “The Soloist,” the action thriller “Hanna,” an adaptation of “Anna Karenina,” and most recently, “Pan,” the prequel to “Peter Pan.” He most recently directed an episode of the popular TV series “Black Mirror.”
“Darkest Hour” will be released on November 24, 2017 by Focus Features.
