Specialty Box Office: ‘Spring Breakers’ Hits $5 Million; ‘Loot’ Starts Strong

Specialty Box Office: 'Spring Breakers' Hits $5 Million; 'Loot' Starts Strong

A24 went for it with “Spring Breakers” this weekend. After a massive limited debut last weekend — taking in $263,002 from just three screens and managing one of the 25 best per-theater-averages ($87,667) ever — the Harmony Korine film went from 3 to 1,104 theaters as most of the country is on the tail end of actual spring break. Did it pay off?

Starring Disney Channel alums Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens (not to mention James Franco) in a not-so-Disney tale of a group of college-aged girls who decide to rob a fast food restaurant to pay for their spring break getaway, the film did not reach the clearly overestimated projections Indiewire made earlier this week, but it did manage $5 million. That was good enough for a place in the overall top 6 and a $4,529 average. That’s definitely enough for A24 to be happy even if its not quite the phenomenon-type numbers its opening suggested might come. However, how the film holds up next weekend will make more clear how far “Breakers” — which notably cost just $2 million and was marketed mostly over social media — can go.

As for films making their debuts this weekend, IFC Films got a very strong number from the exclusive engagement of Adam Leon’s “Gimme The Loot.” Over a year after it led the awards at SXSW, the film managed a promising $23,400 from one theater — one of the best limited debuts of 2013 thus far. Clearly its expansion will be the true test but for now IFC should be happy with “Gimme”‘s loot.

Managing a respectable debut was The Weinstein Company’s “The Sapphires.” The Australian musical — about four indigenous women discovered by a talent scout (Chris O’Dowd) — grossed $40,927 from 4 screens for a $10,232 average. This is the kind of film that tends to build on word-of-mouth, suggesting its most impressive numbers could still be ahead of it.
