'Suspiria' Remake: Director Luca Guadagnino Will Begin Production This September

Director Luca Guadagnino has a busy season coming up ahead. In an interview with The Playlist, he discussed his latest film “A Bigger Splash,” an erotic drama about a couple’s sun-drenched vacation complicated by an unexpected visit of an old friend and his daughter, and revealed that he will start filming his remake of Dario Argento‘s 1977 landmark horror film “Suspiria” this September, following an adaptation of André Aciman’s acclaimed debut novel “Call Me By Your Name.” Guadagnino was initially a producer on the remake set to be directed by David Gordon Green (“George Washington,” “The Sitter”), but Green eventually left the project and Guadagnino took over. According to a HitFix article published last year, Guadagnino says his version will be “set in Berlin in 1977” and will be about “about the mother and the concept of motherhood and about the uncompromising force of motherhood.” He also wants to reunite with the cast of “A Bigger Splash” for the remake.

The Italian filmmaker Dario Argento is responsible for some of most influential horror films of the last century, including “Suspiria,” “Inferno” and “Tenebrae.” “Suspiria” follows an American ballet student who transfers to a German dance academy and discovers that it’s a front for something far more sinister and supernatural. Director Luca Guadagnino’s other films include “Melissa P.” and “I Am Love.”

“A Bigger Splash” will enter theaters on May 13th.
