‘True Detective’ Season 3 Officially Greenlit: Season Details and Directors Announced
For those fascinated to see what might come next for HBO’s landmark limited series, good news: “True Detective” Season 3 is officially happening.
The official logline is as follows: “The next installment of ‘True Detective’ tells the story of a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks, and a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods.”
Despite the mention of the Ozarks, we can’t promise a Jason Bateman cameo/crossover — however, we can confirm that Oscar winner Mahershala Ali will play the character of “Wayne Hays, a state police detective from Northwest Arkansas.”
Similar to past seasons, Nic Pizzolatto will write all episodes, with the notable exception of Episode 4, which he co-wrote with David Milch. Splitting directing duties are Pizzolatto and Jeremy Saulnier, who most recently directed the critically acclaimed film “Green Room.”
“Nic has written truly remarkable scripts. With his ambitious vision and Mahershala Ali and Jeremy Saulnier aboard, we are excited to embark on the next installment of ‘True Detective,’” HBO’s Casey Bloys said in a statement.
“I’m tremendously thrilled to be working with artists at the level of Mahershala and Jeremy,” Pizzolatto also said in a statement. “I hope the material can do justice to their talents, and we’re all very excited to tell this story.”
Credited producers on the series include Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Cary Joji Fukunaga, Steve Golin, Bard Dorros, and Richard Brown.
No official release date has been announced, but now that the starting gun has been fired, expect plenty more news to come, especially when it comes to filling out the cast. Three time periods means a whole lot of opportunities for actors — and “True Detective” has a history with attracting the very best.
