‘The Assassination of Gianni Versace’ Defeats ‘Godless,’ Wins Emmy for Outstanding Limited Series

Ryan Murphy continues to be a powerhouse at the Emmys when it comes to the outstanding limited series category. The creator’s second installment of “American Crime Story,” entitled “The Assassination of Gianni Versace,” took home the prize at the 2018 Emmy awards. The show’s debut season, “The People vs. OJ Simpson,” won the same honor in 2016.

“The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” beat out TNT’s “The Alienist,” Nat Geo’s “Genius: Picasso,” Netflix’s “Godless,” and Showtime’s “Patrick Melrose” to win the 2018 Emmy for outstanding limited series. “Patrick Melrose” was considered one of its biggest challengers given its acclaim and the star power provided by Benedict Cumberbatch. “Godless” also gained momentum during the show after winning actor honors for Jeff Daniels and Merrett Wever.

Murphy’s name has been all over the outstanding limited series category this decade. While his FX anthology series “American Horror Story” has never won the prize, installments “Murder House,” “Asylum,” “Coven,” and “Freak Show,” were all nominated. “Gianni Versace” earned 18 nominations, more than any other limited series in 2018. Actors Darren Criss, Penelope Cruz, Edgar Ramirez, Finn Wittrock, Ricky Martin, and Judith Light all received nominations. Criss won for outstanding lead actor.

While Murphy is back on FX right now “American Horror Story: Apocalypse,” he’s yet to confirm when a planned Hurricane Katrina-focused “American Crime Story” will air.
