Earlier this year, it was revealed that a sequel to J.J. Abrams’ 2008 film “Cloverfield” was to be released after being filmed and developed in secret. Dan Trachtenberg’s “10 Cloverfield Lane” was released to positive reviews and a strong commercial performance. Now, The Wrap reports that the upcoming J.J. Abrams-produced film “God Particle” is actually a third “Cloverfield” film. A source close to the project says that Abrams and Paramount Pictures are developing more films for the shared universe and both parties are aiming for one “Cloverfield” film per year.

The film will follow a team of astronauts who make a shocking discovery and are forced to fight for their very lives. It will be directed by Julius Onah (“The Girl Is in Trouble”) from a script by Oren Uziel (“22 Jump Street”), and will star David Oyelowo (“Selma”), Gugu Mbatha-Raw (“Beyond the Lights”), Ziyi Zhang (“Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”), Elizabeth Debicki (“The Man From U.N.C.L.E.”), Daniel Brühl (“Inglourious Basterds”) and Chris O’Dowd (“Bridesmaids”).

Meanwhile, Abrams is currently executive producing the new HBO series “Westworld” as well as the next “Star Wars” film, directed by Rian Johnson. He’s best known for directing the first two “Star Trek” reboot films and “Star War: A Force Awakens,” as well as co-creating and writing popular shows like “Lost” and “Alias.”
